Spring Home Makeover with Little Tikes Americana Sort ‘n Store Toy Chest

Ethan moved into his big brothers room when he was almost two. He inherited everything from the full sized bed to the white shelving on the walls. All of which were meant for an older child… but we have been making it work.

With Ethan’s expanding toy “library” came the feeling of clutter. Toys laying out in the open on shelves works, but when you have a lot of toys out on the shelf or they are just tossed up there (like a 3 year old does when they “clean up”)… it looks bad.

I was so excited to start the process that I forgot to take a before shot. These photos are after moving his furniture. If you look at the photo above on the left… the head of Ethan’s bed was under the sports hanging on the blue wall and where the head of his bed is now was another white shelf like the one in the photo on the right.

So I removed the white shelving from that section of the wall and then moved his bed (which is a tad too big for the space it’s finally in… I’m hoping to eventually replace it with a low loft bed or a bunk bed) so that it is no longer centered in the room. This freed up a lot of floor space for play, but left toys without a “home”. As you can see, I put them in tubs at the foot of his bed for temporary storage.

Little Tikes had the perfect solution for us… their Sort ‘n Store Toy Chest in Americana (red/white/blue). I loved that the interior had a large storage area for his big trucks and tracks, but it also had two bins for smaller items underneath.

The toy box arrived while I was at the hospital visiting my Dad, but my husband decided he would take a crack at putting it in Ethan’s room. He was glad to see that it is basically a “no assembly required” product. The toy box comes in four pieces.

There are no tools required for assembly. The lid has notches in the back that fit into a groove. Place the notches in the groove and lower the lid. The lower drawers simply slide underneath. Voila!

The after photo shows it all! All of Ethan’s bigger toys fit into the toy box without any problems… there was actually room left over. The colors are perfect for his primary colored room and it tidies up the toy mess… out of sight.

I decided to try to take a photo of the toys inside the box. Ethan was so excited to show his toy box off he kept getting in the way. You can see his raceway inside, but there are some bigger toy trucks in there, a toy car garage and more. Underneath you can see his blocks and he usually has a handful of books in the other cubby.

So there you have it. A “toy” used as a room makeover item. It is functional, looks nice, holds a good deal of toys (big and small) and keeps them sorted so the small ones don’t sink to the bottom, the lid is easily removed for safety (yes… I have found him in the toy box several times playing) and the cubbies underneath can be brought to another area of the house to play and then brought back.

It’s a great toy & so worth it. It’s held up great & is definitely the most played with toy in our backyard…. much more than the $1,000 swing set/tree house…. I highly recommend this toy!!
