Making the Most of a Small Apartments

If you live in a small apartment, you are probably already aware of some of the problems that can arise in the process of designing your space. When you have less space to work with, you have to be even more aware of every design decision that you make. These are some tips that can help you determine ways to make the most of every inch of your small apartment space without sacrificing the visual elements of your home’s design.

Using Every Space

tableIn a small apartment, every space counts, so you need to think of unconventional ways to use the space that is available to you. One place to look for more space is in your closets. While you might not want to give up a valuable storage space, you can turn some of these spaces into functional parts of the design of your home. If, for example, you have a very large closet in a hallway, you can turn that into a very small home office. You can also turn a wide closet into a laundry room or even a small hall closet into a crafting space. Check each space to see if you can fit furniture in it. Even if you have to stand outside the door, when you need somewhere to put a sewing table, a spare closet can provide the perfect space you need. You should also consider other options, such as any space available underneath stairways, for potential small rooms. To create storage and free up some of these areas, think up instead of out. Install shelving that begins at the ceiling. High wall space is an area that is underused, so take advantage of it to help create more floor space that you need for other things.

Downsizing Furniture

Instead of cramming a large sofa and armchair into a small living room, consider downsizing all of your furniture so that you can have the appearance of a larger room and also so you can actually have more space. Some office furniture can double very well as living room furniture; it takes up much less space and can even be less expensive. If you only need regular seating space for two people, eliminate all the extra chairs that are only used when you have guests by replacing them with smaller, more convenient office chairs or leather tub chairs from Chesterfield Sofa Company. Instead of a large sofa, buy a loveseat. Instead of a huge rectangular coffee table, purchase two small side tables and put them next to each other in front of the sofa. This will not only take up less space, but it will allow you to reduce down to just one table if you ever need extra room.

It isn’t fun to have to eliminate things from your home’s design because you have limited space, but there are some perks to having a small apartment. Moving is easier when you have less or smaller furniture, you spend less money on your interior design, and you are forced to be creative, which usually results in a more interesting and cozy space.
