How to clean and maintain your swingset

Have you recently added a swingset to your garden and aren’t sure how to clean and maintain it? Maybe you are considering purchasing a swing set but want to know what its cleaning and maintenance requirements will be? No matter the reason, we have the answer for you! Today, we walk you through the cleaning and maintenance steps for a swing set to help you keep your set clean and safe, or determine if it’s the right choice for your garden.

How to clean your swingset

Cleaning your swing set is a straightforward task that can be completed in an afternoon, depending on its level of dirtiness. The cleaning requirements can vary depending on the material used for your swing set. We recommend checking with the manufacturer before cleaning to determine if there are specific guidelines you need to follow. To help you clean your swingset today, we do have generic steps that you can follow, regardless of the swingset’s material:

  • Remove loose debris

Before you begin, spend some time removing any loose debris, like leaves and sticks, from the swingset. You can do this by hand or use a garden hose to spray down the swingset, washing away loose dirt and leaves.

  • Clean the surface

You will need a cleaning solution for the swing set, which can be made using mild dish soap or a non-toxic cleaner, as long as it is safe for use on swing sets. Mix a small amount with warm water in a large bucket. You should avoid using any bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the swingset’s frame and components.

When you have your solution, dip a soft-bristled brush or cloth into the water and use it to scrub all surfaces. You should also focus on areas with grime buildup, ensuring all dirt is removed. Some people recommend using a pressure washer, but we recommend caution, as the force of the water can strip essential stains or damage the equipment. Instead, use your garden hose to rinse stubborn areas before scrubbing again.

  • Rinse the swingset

Once you are satisfied with your scrubbing, use your hose to rinse down the entire swing set. Doing so helps to remove any final dirt and prevents residue from the cleaning solution from being left behind. The soapy residue can dry sticky, reducing the effectiveness of your hard work after cleaning.

  • Dry the swingset

You can use a clean towel to wipe the surfaces of the swingset dry, reducing water spots and allowing your children to start enjoying the set again. Alternatively, you can leave the swingset to air dry completely, depending on the weather.

How to maintain your swingset

Once you have cleaned your swing set, consider the maintenance required to keep it safe for your children to use. Maintenance can vary slightly depending on the material used for your swing set. If it has additional activities, like slides or climbing ropes, but typically, you will need to carry out the following maintenance:

Ensure it is assembled correctly

The key to a well-maintained swingset is to ensure it was assembled correctly to begin with. Incorrectly assembled swingsets are more likely to get damaged, leaving you with costly repairs or replacements. When assembling a swing set, follow the instructions closely, ensuring each step is completed correctly before proceeding to the next. We recommend setting aside some time before assembling to ensure you have all the necessary pieces and tools to complete the swing set.

When assembling the swings, ensure you have someone to assist you. Many of the components can be heavy, and a second pair of hands is essential to reduce the chance of injuries or damage to the set. You will also want to use an anchoring system to secure the swing set in place, so you don’t need to worry about it tipping over. Check that your swing set comes with an anchoring system. If not, ensure you purchase a suitable one for your swing set’s brand and size.

Carry out regular inspections

Regular inspections are essential to ensure that you spot any damage and repair it before it becomes more serious or your child is hurt while playing. Look for any missing screws, loose bolts, damage to swing ropes, or any issues before the swingset is used. You can tighten and replace any bolts or screws yourself, but for any other damage, you should report it to the manufacturer, who can arrange for a repair or replacement. While you wait for these repairs, do not use the swing set to prevent any injuries to your children.

You should also look for signs of rot or rust, depending on the swingset material. These can make your swingset dangerous to use, and you must stop using the swingset if you see any signs of rust and rot, addressing them as soon as possible.

Protect the swingset from the elements

As your swingset will be left outside all year, you will need to ensure it is protected from the elements, making it safe for your children to use. The protection you provide depends on the material of the swing set. Metal swingsets require a rust protection spray or sealant to be applied annually to prevent rust from developing during wet weather. Wooden swingsets will need to be stained or sealed to protect the wood, keeping it free from rot. This typically needs to be done every year or so to ensure it remains protected.

Where possible, it’s worth relocating the swing set to areas that will provide protection. Moving your swing set to a sheltered area reduces the wind and rain that hit the set, keeping it damage-free and safe to use. If you have the space, you might also consider dismantling the swingset and storing it until the weather improves.
