Destination Wedding UK: What Is a Marriage Visitor Visa?

What Couples Should Know Before Applying for a UK Marriage Visitor Visa

All ready to tie the knot and want to say “I do” in style? If you and your sweetheart are keen on having a destination wedding, ‘Ye Olde Worlde’ has something unique on offer for every couple.

The destination wedding market in the UK is growing. Experts forecast a CAGR of 3.2% during 2025-2035, i.e., from an estimated $3.6 billion in 2025 to $4.9 billion by 2035.1 A traditional ceremony in medieval castles or stately homes, a romantic one set amongst most picturesque locations, or a posh London affair with all the modern luxuries civilisation has bestowed upon us so far, the choice is yours as long as you have the budget. Most importantly, you and your significant other must meet the eligibility criteria to apply for the specific UK visa that will allow you to get married on British soil.

We are talking about a Marriage Visitor visa UK. If you both are foreign nationals who wish to marry in the UK or enter into a civil partnership, or intend to give notice for either, you must apply for a Marriage Visitor visa before travelling to the country.

What Is a Marriage Visitor Visa UK and Who Can Apply?

A Marriage Visitor visa is a short-term visa (i.e., valid for up to six months), for foreign citizens coming to the UK to get married (or register their civil partnership), or giving the notice for the same. People who are Irish citizens, have settled or pre-settled status in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme (or have already applied under the scheme and are waiting for a decision), or who qualify for British citizenship (including having dual nationality) are, however, exempt.

You must get married (or form your civil partnership) within six months of your arrival in the UK or within your visa validity period, whichever is shorter. You may also transit through the UK on your way to a third country on this visa.

You cannot stay in the UK after your marriage or civil partnership, extend your visa or switch to a different visa route. Likewise, a Marriage Visitor visa does not allow you to work/study in the UK or access public funds.

What Conditions Must I Fulfill to Get a UK Marriage Visitor Visa?

You must:

  • Be 18 or more
  • Have a genuine relationship with your spouse/partner-to-be
  • Not already be married or in a partnership which legally invalidates your proposed marriage/civil partnership in the UK
  • Be able to prove that you are visiting for six months or less, will leave before your visa expires, will not live for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, and will not make the UK your main home
  • Have sufficient funds to cover your expenses (or have someone sponsoring you), including the cost of your return/onward journey

What Supporting Documents Do I Need to Apply?

Usually, the Home Office asks for the following documents to be submitted with your Marriage Visitor visa application.

  • A valid passport or any other travel documents
  • Detailed plan of your proposed marriage or civil partnership ceremony in the UK (e.g., the booking confirmation receipt for a licensed venue, etc.)
  • A divorce decree or death certificate of your erstwhile partner, if applicable
  • Proof of funds, including evidence showing that you are covering at least a part of the ceremony costs
  • Proof of your UK accommodation
  • Details of your sponsor(s), if any, and their proof of funds
  • Travel health insurance
  • Return/onward journey ticket
  • Evidence of where you are planning to settle with your spouse/partner eventually

However, this list is by no means exhaustive, and they may ask you for further evidence depending on your circumstances or immigration history.

How Can I Apply for a UK Marriage Visitor Visa?

You will have to apply for a Marriage Visitor visa before traveling to the UK. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the application process:

  1. Create an account with your email ID on the Home Office website to get started
  2. Have all your supporting documents and other relevant information ready with you so as to answer the questions on the online form completely and accurately
  3. Start filling in the relevant online application form for a Marriage Visitor visa. You can save your form and complete it later, if required
  4. Once you have completed the online form, submit the same along with scanned copies of required supporting documents
  5. Pay the required visa processing fees either by a credit or a debit card

Note that, you will have to prove your identity as part of your visa application process. How you need to do so depends on where you are from and the type of passport you have.

If you are eligible to prove your identity through the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app, you can use the same to scan your required documents to prove your identity. Otherwise, you will have to book an appointment with your nearest UK visa application centre in your country of residence to submit your biometric details.

How Long Will They Take to Process My Visa? How Much Do I Have to Pay?

A Marriage Visitor visa UK processing fee is £127 as of 2026. The Home Office usually takes up to three weeks to process your visa, so plan accordingly.

You may also be eligible to get a decision within five working days by paying an additional £500 fee for a priority service, or by the end of the next working day by paying £1,000 for a super priority service. However, if your application form is incomplete or inaccurate, or the Home Office asks for additional supporting documents or is experiencing a high volume of applications at the time, this timeline will increase.

What I Must Keep in Mind While Applying for a Marriage Visitor Visa UK?

The Home Office rigorously scrutinizes all Marriage Visitor visa applications to rule out any sham marriage or civil partnership plan to avoid immigration abuse. This is more so now given that the UK immigration policies are getting stricter by the day, with the government and the opposition pledging alike to keep the immigration numbers in check.

In short, your application and supporting documents must be in impeccable order. Any violation of visa conditions may get your visa canceled or revoked, and can affect your future UK visa applications.

Consult a UK immigration specialist lawyer to ensure a hassle-free visa experience, and enjoy your special day!
