Missouri winters can be cold and harsh. But when the heat turns on, the air gets terribly dry in our house. My oldest son starts getting nose bleeds in the mornings and everyone get the dry nose sniffles and coughs. Humidifiers help moisten nasal passages and soothe dry coughs so everyone can breathe easier and sleep peacefully through the night. Knowing this, we installed a whole house humidifier several years back. It has since stopped working and so now we rely on room humidifiers.
Humidifiers can help:
Emma and Ethan’s rooms were the last to get a humidifier and I wanted to have it somewhat blend into the décor. I found Crane humidifiers at a local store and fell in love. Crane has taken the standard cool mist humidifier and added (adorable) personality to it. I chose the Hello Kitty humidifier for Emma’s room.
I immediately fell in love with the Hello Kitty humidifier. The colors are perfect for Emma’s room, it produces a good amount of vapor and (when wanted) can serve as a night light!
The humidifier is super easy to use. The pink compartment turns upside down and quickly fills with water (filtered or distilled water is suggested to avoid white dust from hard water). Screw the cap back on and settle it back into the basin and replace Hello Kitty’s face. After the initial fill, it is important to empty the water basin whenever you refill the water tank. The humidifier will still work but sitting water can breed bacteria and that is not good. Disinfecting the unit on a weekly basis is easy. All you do is place 3-4 capfuls of vinegar in 4 cups of water for the water tanks, shake, let sit for 30 minutes then rinse. Same, but less portion, should also be placed in water basin.
I am loving Emma’s new humidifier. She is having fewer and fewer dry nose problems in the morning. I also love knowing I have one running since the FDA issued the advisory warning against the use of Over the Counter cold and cough medicines for children under the age of 6. IF she were to get sick, I have a humidifier to help her breathe easier. Lastly, I don’t have to worry about one of the kids “getting in to” the humidifier and getting hurt. Cool mist does not boil like warm mist and it is recommended for croup.
