Sunscreen Bands Monitor Your Kids Sun Exposure

Sunscreen Bands Monitor Your Kids Sun Exposure

In the United States, 1 in 5 children will develop skin cancer.

Did that get your attention?

I have 4 children, so what does this mean for my family?

To me, these are just unacceptable statistics.

sunbands1

Just under two years ago we went through a skin cancer scare with my Dad. He spent his entire life worshipping the sun. Shirtless, deep tan and on the water was his lifestyle.

We found the spot on his shoulder when he was in the hospital for another surgery. Long story short, thankfully we caught it early enough and removed all of it before it spread to his lymph nodes.

Skin cancer is 90% preventable and with the proper knowledge we can hopefully change those stats.

I am doing whatever I can to make sure my children are not one of the five. This means starting our pool time at home with sunscreen bands.

sunbands2

Out of the package sunscreen bands are were a very light pink. They are not active yet… simply expose them to sunlight.

sunbands3

Just a few seconds in the sun and they were activated and a nice purple color.

sunbands4

Because you need to allow the first application of sunscreen to set 10-15 minutes, we activated them at home and lathered the kids up with sunscreen.

When applying the sunscreen, be sure to apply it on the skin under the band and on the band itself as well as the rest of your child as usual.

The patented color-changing technology monitors UVA & UVB exposure to remind you when to reapply sunscreen and when to get out of the sun for the day.

sunbands5sunbands7

I called the kids over after they had been playing for a few minutes so you could see the nice deep purple color the bands turn to when you first start your outing.

I asked them to peek at their bands every so often and let me know if the color changed.

sunbands6sunbands8

This faded purple color is a reminder to reapply sunscreen. Our color change happened with only an hour of exposure using an SPF of 70 rated for “wet kids”.

I was astounded to realize that with that little bit of time it was already suggested to reapply, but we did! Typically I wouldn’t even start thinking about reapplying until we had been there a couple of hours.

The bands do not have a time or heat element to them, they only measure exposure and with as strong as the sun was feeling, I totally believed them.

If/When Band reaches a creme color, you have reached your maximum recommended exposure for one day & you should cover up or get out of the sun.

sunbands9

We stayed at the pool for an additional 30 minutes and the bands did not change any more.

Because sunscreen bands function in both salt and chlorine water we are covered for our entire summer. Our pool is a salt water pool but we occasionally head out to the local water park that uses chlorine in their water.

With sun safety always on my mind I am investing in more sunscreen bands to monitor their UVA & UVS sun exposure.

Sunscreen bands are proud partners with the Melanoma Research Alliance. MRA is particularly amazing for two reasons: it is the largest private funder of melanoma research, and 100% of all donations go directly to research. Grants are reviewed and awarded by their Grant Review Committee and only under the condition that every penny goes directly into research (ex no overhead or administrative costs).
