Home Makeover | Amana Tall Tub Dishwasher Review

by Heather on September 3, 2012

We have slowly been working on replacing our older white kitchen appliances with newer stainless. We love how crisp stainless looks and that it gives an updated feel. Our current dishwasher was in the home when we bought it 10 years ago. Although it was still functioned it was dated, not energy efficient and well… blah.

During my search for a new stainless unit I stumbled on the Amana brand. After searching their site we decided on the Tall tub dishwasher with ENERGY STAR® qualification.

stainless steel dishwasher

The Amana tall tub dishwasher with ENERGY STAR® qualification will help you save money while conserving water and energy. Doing dishes with this model uses 19% less energy and 48% less water. On top of that, it looks sharp!

Some of the features that make this a great dishwasher:

  • ENERGY STAR® Qualified
  • Triple Filter Wash System
  • Twice as Nice™ Silverware Baskets
  • Terrific Top Rack
  • Tall Tub Interior
  • High Temperature Wash Option
  • Electronic Console
  • Light Item Clips
  • Delay Start Option
  • Heated Dry Option
  • 1-Hour Wash Cycle
  • Cup Shelves

One feature we noticed right away with the Amana was the deep tub. We noticed it because the door was a lot lower to the ground (which means you have to bend over a little more to unload the dishwasher). This is a very slight inconvenience for the added room the deep tub gives you. There have been times that I’ve tried to put a pot in my old dishwasher and it just wouldn’t fit. With the capacity to wash 12 place settings there is plenty of room in the Amana!

This particular dishwasher comes with two shorter silverware baskets instead of one long one. I love the flexibility that this gives us when loading the bottom rack. With a family of six we typically have the entire rack full of plates. This particular wash we ended up with a cup and bowl on the bottom because the top was already full. Being able to move one of the baskets gives a little more room at the end right where you need it.

While I am talking about the bottom rack, I love that there are a few more places in the Amana bottom rack (compared to my old dishwasher) for our larger crockery bowls leaving more room on the top rack for the plastic ware. Have I mentioned how happy I am with how clean the dishes on the top rack come out? Our old unit would flip the plastic cups and bowl and fill them with filthy water leaving me to clean them by hand (and waste more water). In over a month of use we have not had a single plastic item flip in this dishwasher. Every dish has come out clean with no residue.

dishwasher controls

Let’s talk controls. Our old dishwasher had a dial for a control panel. Although it worked, I found it cumbersome to use at times and more times than not I would overshoot the setting I wanted and would have to open the unit to turn it off and continue turning the dial to the right spot. The Amana control panel is simple to use. Choose your cycle: heavy, normal, 1 hours… then choose your options: Hi Temp heat, Heated Dry, or no heat… then choose if you would like to delay the cycle. Hit the start button and your dishes are on their way to being clean!

The Amana Tall Tub Dishwasher is a streamlined unit with extra room, is energy efficient, uses less water, has easy to use controls, does the job right the first time and looks great while doing it.

I can’t believe how many years I went without a dishwasher. It was terrible! Now we have one, but it came with the house and I’m not sure how long it will last. Thanks for sharing your review!

I love it! It is so hard to get large casserole dishes and pans in the regular one. I am very happy for you.

I agree, having the extra room is worth the bending to pick up the low door, after a big party I am not in the mood to hand-wash every casserole dish or platter!

It is amazing when you don’t get a new appliance for a long time how much they have changed when you do, isn’t it? :)

I have a dishwasher similar to your old white one. I can hardly fit anything in it and the knob to make it work isn’t working so well. I miss my old house with the tall dishwasher. I’ve never had stainless, but I love my Amana side by side refrigerator so I’m sure this dishwasher is a fabulous appliance!
