Jack Mat Hearth Seat & Child Protector Review

Jack Mat Hearth Seat & Child Protector

14378511_tq3c

I grew up in a house with a brick fireplace hearth. I used to frequently play on the floor in front of the fireplace and remember a few times smacking my head fairly hard on the bricks. When I had my first two children we didn’t have a fireplace to worry about.

Fast forward to present day… we now have two young children (again) and a fireplace. Granted, it’s not a brick fireplace…. but it still smarts when you smack a body part against it. We use our living room often. We play video games, we build with Legos, we play trains. Sometimes the kids are so excited or distracted that they trip over the corner or smack their arm, leg or forehead on the edges.

I was contacted by Jack Mat recently to judge my interest in a hearth seat/child protector.

Every Jack-Mat fireplace pad is constructed of high quality flame retardant materials.  Our patented hearth padding allows you to create a child proof fireplace in your home.  And our hearth cushions will provide a comfortable place to sit and additional seating in your room.  It is a child safety seat and furniture all in one.  Every Jack-Mat has a sturdy well constructed wooden frame, two layers of comfortable padding and is upholstered with stain resistant fabric.  No assembly is required.  Easy to install and remove.
Monogramming is also available.

I was impressed with what I saw on their website. The photos showed many types of seats they have created and the way they transformed the look and feel of the room was stunning. Not only are these seats a safety product for your children, they also provide extra seating in a crowded room.

I decided a Jack Mat would be a great fit for our house. Not only do I have rambunctious kids, but we also have a rather large extended family. When they come to visit we quickly run out of extra seating. I was excited about the features the Jack Mat offered:

  • Pads the hearth to help baby proof your home.
  • Provides child safety for the fireplace
  • Adds attractive comfortable seating to your room while protecting your children.
  • Custom made to fit over any hearth.
  • Is available in many fire retardant fabric colors, monogramming available.
  • Installs and removes easily – no assembly required.

Ordering the Jack Mat was simple and painless. I took a few measurements, chose my fabric color and sent in this photo of my hearth.

I went back and forth a few times with my color choice, but to be honest any of their standard colors would have looked great. The six samples below are their standard offerings. They have over 100 other choices available for an additional charge.

The website suggests up to a two week wait. I didn’t keep track, but it felt like my seat arrived quicker than that. This was one massive package that I eagerly ripped open. The company made every effort to make sure the Jack Mat arrived in pristine condition including a nice wrap in plastic wrap.

After unwrapping I got a good look at the fabric. I was impressed with the quality and I could tell this was going to last years longer than I had expected. Even with frequent (sitting) use, this was a durable fabric meant to withstand time. The color was a perfect match to the swatch I chose online and the seat fit over my hearth perfectly. Installing was as simple as placing it over my hearth and sitting down!

It’s been a few weeks now and I am in love with my Jack Mat. It definitely pads against bumps and scrapes but has also provided seating a time or two. It’s padded enough that even boney hineys are comfortable for a short period of time. My favorite feature is how it looks. The Jack Mat changes the look and feel of the room. I think it feels more inviting and warm. Although the Jack Mat is a little pricey, it is worth every penny. Safety, durability, seating and room transformation… it will be a part of our living room years beyond the kids playing roughly beside it.

I like that they have so many colors to choose from and that you can have them Monogrammed to personalize your Jack Mat Hearth seat and child protector. We are actually replacing our existing fireplace with a new one this spring. We have already bought the new fireplace insert and will be building the rock chimney this spring and the Jack Mat Hearth Seat would be fantastic. It’s to cold to go with out the fireplace because today it is -1 degrees so we have to wait to replace it for about 2 more months. We have a two and three year old running around and I’m always worried about them being to close to the fire place. We live in Maine so we always have the wood burning to heat the home and with little ones I’m so scared that they might get burned. This is one of the main reasons we are redoing the fireplace to start with. We have six children ages 13 to 22 and two Grand Children ages 2 and 3 . We will be having Grand Children running around this house for years to come so this project really has to be done to give me a little piece of mind. Every time one of the Grand Children wander near that end of the room I jump in panic to retrieve them to the other end of the room. I feel like a yo yo back and forth back and forth. By the time they go home I am stressed out and exhausted lol I want them to be able to run around Grammy’s house safely and that’s why this fireplace is getting a make over~!!! Thanks for sharing this review and giveaway with all of us :)
