Yo Gabba Gabba! LIVE! There’s a Party in My City Review

Saturday November 6th Kaytlin and I took Emma and Ethan to see Yo Gabba Gabba! LIVE! at the Kansas City Midland Theatre to celebrate her 4th birthday. This was Emma and Ethan’s first “concert” and I wasn’t quite sure how they would handle it.

They theatre was dimly lit while we were waiting and I was incredibly happy that I brought some light toys from home for them to keep themselves occupied (I’m such a cheapskate, but I just couldn’t swallow $10 x 2 kids for light toys).

Our seats were on the 3rd floor balcony. I was worried, at first, when I found out where we were… but as you can see our view wasn’t too bad. The seating itself was a little tight. The Midland is an older theatre and we sort of expected it. I am not a small girl and my daughter is rather tall (6 foot). Kaytlin’s knees were jammed into the seats in front of us and I was just happy to have a small two year old sitting next to me. Once the show started, though, we soon forgot our little discomforts.

See that ^ ??? That was directly over our heads.

It didn’t take Ethan very long before he noticed them (balloons are an obsession for him). They released these during the balloon song and we were swallowed up in a pool of balloons. I wish I had the camera ready during this because the smile on Ethan’s face was priceless…

he just kept saying “baaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllooooooooooooooooooooooons mommy!” over and over.

Priceless.

The entire show was a blast. The music wasn’t overpowering and it kept Emma and Ethan’s attention the entire time. There was confetti, balloons, bubbles, a “dark” scene with flashlights and they continually asked the children to get up and interact with them (you will see that in the video).

During intermission you could text the word SHOUT followed by your message and it would (hopefully) scroll across the screen. I did this and as you can see “happy birthday emma” made it!

It was great fun to see our favorite characters in person and sing along with them. They very creatively had people “jumping out” of the screen and out onto the stage. Emma seemed to be in shell shock the first half, but when they came back from intermission she was out of her seat and dancing. Even Ethan, at 2 years old, enjoyed it enough to keep his attention. He didn’t get out of his seat and dance, but I think the balloon drop made his night.

Check to see if there is a party in your city soon!!!
