Kidz-Med VeraTemp Non-Contact Thermometer

IMG_4342

Because I’ve been a Mom for 19+ years, I have seen many advances/new products in the baby department. Once upon a time my main option to take my baby’s temperature was a glass thermometer (did you know they don’t make those anymore because of the mercury?).

With Josh, the digital age advanced a little. The thermometer I had was usable under the arm (which was a much more pleasant place to put it compared to where I had to put the glass mercury thermometer) but it took what felt like forever to read out. Sometimes Josh didn’t have the patience to sit that long.

Here I am again, mom to young children. With Emma the digital age moved to temporal readings (swiping it across the forehead). I was elated when this method was developed! The readings were fairly accurate and as close to instant as you could get. I was no longer holding the kids arms down while they tried to wiggle free!

I recently came across the Kidz-Med VeraTemp Non-Contact Thermometer. To be honest, I just couldn’t believe I could get an accurate reading from a thermometer that didn’t come in contact with the patient. I agreed to try it out and impatiently waited for it to arrive.

IMG_4346

I tried this out several times on anyone that would allow me to. I love the ease, quick response, and large readout on this thermometer. As you can see in the photo, I didn’t have to bother touch Emma to get an accurate reading.

I imagined dozens of times I could have used this. When the kids are sick I tend to check on them often. Now I can check their fever without touching/waking them with the back of my hand or “swipe” thermometer. They can continue to sleep and I can rest easy knowing that their fever is staying down.

IMG_4344

Nothing like multi-uses, right? This thermometer also takes surface temperature readings. Now you can test the temperature of things like baby food, bottles, bath water or chicken nuggets. Notice the readout was red indicating it was too hot.

IMG_4345

I tend to be a very overprotective mom, especially when my babies are tiny. Another fabulous feature… taking “room temperature”. That’s right, no more guessing if the baby’s nursery is too cool and how many blankets to use. I compared the readout on the Kidz-Med to our indoor thermometer and they were only .2 degrees off from each other.

The human forehead is a very vascular and therefore ideal place for measuring temperature. The vasculature in this area is linked to the heart by the carotid artery, which is directly linked to the aorta. It forms part of the main trunk of the arterial system. So long as the patient’s blood flow is permanent and regular, the method allows precise measurement of the temperature. Forehead thermometers can obtain temperature data by rubbing the probe over or being in contact with skin, or they can be totally non-contact.
