If you like music, these are the games for you! First off… DJ Hero 1 & 2 with turntable. We have played Guitar Hero in the past on the PS2 and my older children were experts at it… so DJ Hero was a logical next step. The song mixes are great! Don’t be surprised when you have found yourself a couple of hours into the game. Time moves quickly while you are having fun, right? Oh, don’t be fooled that there are only 3 buttons and it’s going to be super easy. You have to cross fade, scratch, directional scratch and a few extra moves… it can be a challenge! It’s a bit awkward learning to “scratch”, but just like Guitar Hero with a little practice it is second nature. A second player can jump in with another turntable controller or a guitar controller.
To be honest, my kids were more excited about Guitar Hero (probably because of past experience with it). My 18 year old kept saying she loved how she knew so many of the songs. My 13 year old son liked how the animated singers were actually mouthing the words… they looked like they were singing. Although we laughed about boys singing with a female voice in older editions, it was nice to have female figures singing female songs. Some of the other things they liked are… in quick play you can make a play list of the songs you want to play so you don’t have to keep going back to the menu, it’s easy to change difficulty in between songs, and the story line is fun. Josh found it entertaining enough to watch the mini stories unlike other games that you skip over it. Our main complaint is that we cannot figure out how to “sign in” both children separately because they were both playing the guitar. They weren’t wanting to play at the same time, so hopefully we will figure it out. There was still a spot open for names for a microphone, drums and a base. Kaytlin had to play under Joshua’s name even in quick play because she was using the guitar.
Overall, both games are great fun. Whether you are playing alone or in a party atmosphere with other gamers you are sure to enjoy them. If you have older editions these are worth upgrading to. My kids got a kick out of playing newer up to date “hit” songs as well as some oldies (can you believe they included Twisted Sister? lol).
