Disney’s Teen Beach Movie on DVD

teenbeachmovie

The kids and I first became aware about Disney’s Teen Beach Movie when we were watching the trailers before Monsters University. Emma and I gave each other a knowing glance, meaning “hey that looks good!”. When we were offered a copy to review, I could barely finish my sentence before she interjected “Yes!”.

I am a sucker for a fun musical. Disney’s Teen Beach Movie is just that. Set in circa 1962, the main characters, McKenzie “Mack” (Maia Mitchell) and her carefree boyfriend Brady (Ross Lynch), are determined to catch one last epic wave before Mack heads to boarding school. Although they find the “epic wave”, they also found a wicked storm that mysteriously carried them right into Brady’s favorite musical, “Wet Side Story”, a modern beach-themed retelling of “West Side Story”.

Unknowingly, Mack and Brady interfere with the movie’s star-crossed lover plot, one that was supposed to pair a surfer with a biker girl. This leads to a subplot of a mad scientist scheming to alter the weather patterns, take over the local hangout and then, the world.

I love the singing, dancing and 1960’s style clothing (why don’t we have fringe on our swimsuits anyway?). The plot is mild and fun and Disney did a great job melding a classic musical into a fun storyline for fans of every age.

You know, based on the title of the movie alone, I would probably avoid it like the plague. You make it sound fun and nostalgic, though, so I would certainly give it a chance, especially if my girls were interested.
