Sportcraft 3-in-1 Tailgate Game
Ladderball : Washer Toss : Bean Bag Toss
Summer is officially here, and our family’s thoughts turn to outdoor activities. This is our third year of camping and we are always on the lookout for an easily portable, versatile and overall fun outdoor game for the majority of our family. With the ages of our family members being so wide, oftentimes an all-in-one game still does not fit the bill.
The Sportcraft 3-in-1 Tailgate Game features ladderball (otherwise known as monkeyball in our house), washer toss and bean bag toss. Ladderball is not a new game to us. My husband fashioned a ladderball/monkeyball set out of pvc pipe, golf balls and rope a few years back. We have only played bean bag toss at carnivals and washer toss was a new one for me.
My immediate reaction when the game set came was… “O.M.G. this thing is HEAVY!”. This is a substantial item. There are many parts but every piece has its place and bags are provided for things like the bolos, bean bags and washers. Fortunately for me, there is a “map” included in the directions to guide you in putting everything back in the right place so the set will close and lock.
We started with putting the ladderball frame together. Although there are several pieces that comprise each ladder, once it is put together you can rest it aside while playing the other games. We had ours put together the entire length of our camping trip and attached it when someone wanted to play. The ladders are a pretty good size, 23.625” x 46” and the bolos are made with six golf balls. You attach the ladders to the wood target boards (these are the base and used for all three games) and then game on! Emma likes to “play” this game with us, but she frightens me with the bolos (golf balls on string). She gets a handicap and is allowed to toss very close to the ladder.
The first thing Emma and Ethan went for were the bean bags. I love the simplicity of this game and the fact that Emma and Ethan could just toss away and have a blast doing so. The wood target boards have 2 wooden arms that pull out to keep them up at an angle. They are super sturdy and withstood both the kids climbing up them at one point or another (before being scolded). There are 4 bean bags in each color, red and blue. After the initial fight over color our only other obstacle was getting them to take turns. By the end of the trip they both developed pretty good aim!
Washers was a new game to me, but a typical aim and toss game. Scoring was a little confusing for me at first… once that was mastered my only frustration was washers bouncing out of the target area! This is another fun game for the entire family and can be played “seriously” at the exact distance and scoring method or just make the rules up as you go (our family likes to do this). We had fun trying to get as many washers in as we could by tossing all of them at once, tossing them backwards between our legs and, at one point in desperation to end the game quicker, we turned the base around so the wooden section was in front of the target area. I guess we were hoping we might be able to bounce a few more in the correct area because the grass wasn’t doing the trick.
The Sportcraft 3-in-1 Tailgate Game is made for serious and novice tailgaters alike. This set is perfect for bringing friendly competition and entertainment to pre-game tailgates, camping trips, backyard barbeques and more. The pieces are stored within the two target boards when locked together for easy transport and storage. Three-in One Tailgate Game is recommended for ages 6+, but both the toss and play games (bean bags and washers) were easily enjoyed by our 3 and 4 1 /2 year olds.
The set is fairly heavy and of good construction. Our main concern is with the frame of the ladderball. My husband mentioned that it looked and felt like it was made of laminated particle board and mentioned that if it were to get wet (rain), he felt it would probably warp and peel. My solution to this problem was (yes, it started to rain) to pick up the ladder in one piece and put it in the van instead of trying to take it apart and piecing the set back together before a downpour.
