Sodastream Source Home Soda Maker
Sample item received for review. All opinions are my own.
Our family is comprised of a mix of pop lovers and soda water lovers.
The kids are drawn to “pop”. Unfortunately the buying, lugging and disposing of the pop cans can be a real hassle.
That’s not even mentioning the ingredients in “pop” or the effect improper disposal of the cans have on the ecosystem.
Sodastream seemed to be the answer for everyone in our house.
We were sent a Source soda maker to put through the tests.
The new Source is an elegantly-designed soda maker that combines beauty, functionality and efficiency.
Source Starter Kit contents:

The first step to making a nice cup of bubbly is to insert of the CO2 canister.
If you are a planner like myself, purchasing a second canister might scare you with the price. BUT, when you return your empty canister to the store you get the replacement canister for 1/2 the price. If you are doing this at stores like Bed, Bath & Beyond that put our regular coupons be sure to bring them because you can use them on the replacement canister making home soda making even more affordable.
Next step is to fill the bottle up to the fill line with water and then place it on the sodastream machine.
The picture above shows the bottle locked into place. The mechanism actually tilts outwards for you to slide the bottle up onto the machine, then you push the bottle into the locking position seen above with a single-push motion.
To carbonate you simply push the top surface and watch the strength of carbonation through the LED display. No guess work, just instant, visual feedback.
We have found that stopping at 1 or 2 drops is adequate carbonation and extends the life of our CO2 canister.
We have had experience using sodastream bottled flavor, but the sodastream caps were new to us.
I couldn’t believe how easy they were to use. Place a cap on top of the bottle and give a decent little push downwards. As you can see in the bottle above the flavor starts to come out of the cap slowly and mixes with the soda water.
The ingredients are the same whether you chose to use caps or bottles and are so much easier to pronounce than store bought pop. Knowing what’s in a product is important to me. Even the diet versions are aspartame free. Fabulous!
The caps release the flavoring at just the right speed. If you’ve ever used a sodastream with the bottled flavoring you will know what I mean when I say don’t pour it in too fast! Without control the bottle will fizz up and overfill onto your counter.
In just a few minutes you’ve made a 1 liter bottle of soda/pop that is just enough for two to share. No more capping the bottle and hoping it is still fizzy the next day. Of course, if you have extra you can cap the bottle but we rarely run into that situation here.
For the soda water lovers you follow all the steps above and stop before adding flavor. Instead we add fruit and enjoy!

I learned that the US Department of Transportation considers both used and full SodaStream carbonators to be hazardous material. This means that they’re subject to special handling rules and neither UPS nor FedEx will accept them for pickup. Empty carbonators have to be exchanged at certain retailers for the price of the gas.

Once upon a time I had one of these and it was in a box of household goods, when we moved, that was stolen (ugh, worst month of my life!) It never got replaced. I love the root beer flavored soda the most!
