Dressing to My Socks

Years ago I signed up for The Fly Lady… a cleaning program that helps a disorganized flighty girl like me cut the clutter and chaos in my life. One of the first steps in the program was to shine your sink (yes, it really DOES make a difference) and one of the first things that she asks that you do in the morning is shower, get dressed and put your shoes on.

Showering first thing in the morning requires me to get up before the kids do. Sometimes that just isn’t an option because, to be honest, sleep overrules showering (can I get an amen?).

I decided it was time to purchase some new affordable makeup for myself as sort of an encouragement to get out of bed and make myself feel human (and pretty). I’ve seen many moms (and have been there myself) that toss on their sweats, pull their hair back and stumble down the stairs to face their day.

What I’ve found is this… Fly Lady knows what she’s talking about. After a few days of showering first thing, getting dressed and using my new makeup and makeup brush set I felt like a new person. It was liberating to be able to answer the door for Fed Ex and not be embarrassed that it was 10am and I was still in my nightgown, hair a mess and no makeup. It was a definite light bulb moment for me and with my new “time to take care of myself” attitude and resolution, it makes perfect sense. Just the simple act of waking before my kids for a quick shower and getting dressed down to my socks (sorry Fly Lady… I don’t wear my shoes in the house but they are easy slip ons that are right by the door!) helped give me a new light on my day.

Try it… really… it worked for me!

I got overwhelmed by the emails but there is a lot of great information there.

  2. My best friend uses Fly Lady, too. I have tried it but I guess I’m not ready for it. Showering in the morning isn’t part of my routine, though; I shower at night before bed. It’s just what I’ve always done. But I think you are right, and she is right, about getting dressed. I should at least do that. I have a 2 week old baby and so far unless we’re going somewhere, my 3 year old and I are basically in jammies all day. Maybe after her routine gets more established I’ll be ready to give this a try. Kudos to you!

I used to do that but have to exercise first so that slows me down, but I like it.
I used to do Fly Lady but got so into it I gave too much stuff away. LOL

I haven’t heard of that before reading this post. I love the idea behind it though and will have to give it a try! Thanks for sharing.
