Just because school’s out for summer doesn’t mean that learning and exploration have to take a break. To help kids stay excited about science over summer vacation, Scientific Explorer is challenged our family to take part in Scientific Explorer’s Outdoor Science Day!
We spent an afternoon in the backyard playing with a science kit… and Emma and Ethan had a blast!
· My First Backyard Explorer Kit – perfect for young scientists (ages 4+) who want to explore nature
You don’t have to travel very far to become an explorer. There are all sorts of exciting creatures and things to discover right in your own backyard or nearby park. All you have to do is step outside! Get up close and personal with nature—as seen through a microscope. Build a birdfeeder and worm motel. There’s no limit to the adventures you’ll have and the fascinating things you’ll learn about the world around you from the Backyard Explorer kit.
Includes 4 popsicle sticks, 2 rubber bands, bug net, chalk, collecting case, crayon, string, tweezers, two way viewer and guide.
This particular kit caught Emma and Ethan’s eye. They love to go outside and our backyard is a great place to find bug and “things” to view up close. Emma caught a few bugs… an ant and spider… and we put things like grass, dirt, a leaf etc in the magnifier. They had a great time exploring!
· Ice Cream Science – take a break from summer’s heat and make your own ice cream – use multiple flavors to create your own recipes (ages 8+)
Best Of All, Your T-shirt Stays Spotless! This is definitely COOL CHEMISTRY! A unique kit that uses your T-shirt as the ice cream machine. It’s a totally new way to churn your favorite flavors into a yummy ice cream treat. Just put all the ingredients in the container, slip it in a T-shirt, start twirling, and voila – perfect ice cream every time! Kids invent their own secret recipes with flavors and colors. Science experiments investigate why rock salt is used in making ice cream (to create super cooled water), how the size of ice crystals makes ice cream gritty or smooth, and how air adds fluff to the mixture. Learn about solids, liquids, and gases. Created with the ice cream experts at UC Berkeley GEMS.
Includes cocoa powder, rainbow sprinkles, vanilla syrup, strawberry syrup, measuring spoon, stir stick, pipettes, small ziplock bags, large ziplock freezer bags, measuring cup, ice cream dish, lab sheet, instruction guide.
Get ready to use some muscle while swirling and swirling your own homemade ice cream in a t-shirt! We’ve made ice cream in coffee cans and in a traditional machine… the kids had a blast twisting and swirling a t-shirt around to make their own cool flavored dessert.
· Meteor Rocket Kit – make your own rocket, and shoot it into the air (ages 9+)
Patented, High Performance Baking Soda & Vinegar Powered Rockets. There’s nothing else like them! Blast off! The revolutionary Meteor Rocket with its patented baking soda fueling system has thrilled thousands upon thousands of kids across the world. Winner of many awards, this unique rocket is an adventure unlike any other. Unforgettable Science! The Meteor is a science experience kids will never forget. Go for a new altitude record by varying the proportions of baking soda and vinegar, try balsamic vinegar to see if it gives an extra “kick” to the fuel, change the fuselage length to test flight characteristics. Chemistry and physics will never be the same! The Power Secret Our baking soda and vinegar formula starts a chemical reaction inside the patented fueling module, creating enormous power that blasts the Meteor over 100 feet into the sky. 20 inches tall!
Includes 1 plastic bottle, 3 balsa wood pieces, 1 sheet fin template, 1 precut clear tubing, 1 nose cone, 10 in. of weather stripping, 2 pieces red plastic film, 1 piece silver duralar, 1 fueling module, 1 fin holder, instruction booklet.
Josh has had traditional rocket kits, but this particular kit is fueled by a chemical reaction. Older kids get a huge kick out of mixing the ingredients to make the rocket blast off. It’s reusable and challenging to mix the vinegar and baking soda just right to get a big send off.
To share our love of science, Scientific Explorer has created an ongoing Virtual Science Fair. We’re encouraging you – kids, parents, teachers – to share how you learn and experience science, inside and outside the classroom. Send us your video entry – simply post a response video to one of ours! Each month we’ll select a winner of the Virtual Science Fair to showcase and reward with a $50 VISA gift card and free Scientific Explorer products.
ONE OurKidsMom reader is going to win a kit of their choice!
