Planning for the Future with My Directives | Relieve Your Family From Emotional Burden

My Directives LogoThis past month has been eye opening for myself and our family. My Dad had an unexpected illness that put him in the hospital for nearly a month so far. He has been confused and forgetful throughout the entire time. Fortunately for him we were able to get a health care directive and Power of Attorney signed before he wasn’t fit to sign.

This journey has been hard on myself… not just because it was hard to see my Dad in that condition, but because a lot of the medical decisions have been placed on my shoulders. Giving permission to change route in mid-surgery for something my Dad hadn’t know about or agreed to was stressful enough. If the situation had arose that I would have had to make a life saving decision, if he hadn’t filled out the documents to let his wishes be known, I would have had to make those decisions as well. Having a directive in place relieves your family from unneeded emotional burden.

If I had it to do over again, I would have asked him to visit My Directives so that all of his wishes could and would be met. There, he could have planned for the future, including end-of-life decisions. We knew that “some day” we would be put in this position because of his health history, but an impending or unexpected illness, accident and even death are difficult subjects to tackle. When he is finally released and on his own again, I will encourage him to visit My Directives.

MyDirectives.com is the very first HIPAA compliant web-based system for creating & storing advance medical directives and is endorsed by Baylor, the 5th largest health care system in the US. What’s great about this site is that you can create and update your documents easily at any time. Having gone through the process of getting a health care directive the old fashioned way, I can see why oftentimes these documents don’t get updated or even made.

Without an advance medical directive family members and health care providers are left with difficult choices, but storing medical wishes and emergency info online means you’ll get to have the final say. Best of all, it’s free.
