Philips PD700/37 7-Inch LCD Portable DVD Player

My recent trip to Atlanta was fantastic… including the plane ride. At first I thought for sure I was in for a l o n g ride because of the young child that planted his behind just a couple of seats away from me. Then his mom pulled out a portable DVD player and that was the last peep I heard from him.

That made me think of several instances that a portable DVD player would come in handy in my life. After a little searching I found the Philips PD700/37 7-inch LCD Portable DVD Player. It has a high product rating on Amazon and I was excited to try it out.

When unboxing the unit, I instantly noticed the white outer shell. It gives the DVD player a sharp attractive look, but I wondered how white might stand up to my children’s hands. I’ve decided that the color isn’t a major issue though, as I don’t generally allow my children to manhandle my electronic devices (I’m always too worried they might accidentally drop it). We have gone the route of mommy setting up the DVD and placing the player on a flat surface for them to view.

whiteThe second thing I noticed was the compactness of the unit. This makes it perfect for popping into my diaper bag and with it only weighing around 2 1/2 lbs. I never notice it’s there. The small screen concerned me at first, but once the video began playing the crispness and brightness of the picture won me over. The kids haven’t complained once about the screen being too small.

The unit itself was super simple to use right out of the box. I had it unpacked, plugged in and set up with a movie within a few minutes. The buttons are self explanatory and if you have had experience using any DVD player you will be able to figure it out easily.

The right side of the unit has a port for headphones (yeah!), an AV out (so you can wait it on a television), the volume slider and the on/off button. The left side of the unit has a slider to pop open the DVD compartment. The front of the unit has a glowing light indicator to show when the machine is charging or charged.

I have noticed that the player will only run about 2 hours on a full charge, which leaves me wishing for a little more battery life. Generally I won’t need more than 2 hours at a time, but if you are out and about with the unit it’s simple to plug it into the cigarette lighter for a quick charge or to play the machine in the car.

I have to admit I was super excited to see that Philips decided to include the car charger with the main unit. I am used to companies wanting to nickel and dime me with accessories. You will have everything you need for home charging or on the go charging with the single purchase of the DVD player. There are other accessories you can purchase for car travel. The one in particular that I’m considering is a “bag” that will hang the DVD player on the back of a seat in the car.

There are several instances I can think of a portable DVD player coming in handy. Obviously travel (car, plane or train) would be at the top of my list. There are also the ultra long waits at the doctors office, those time you have to drag the kidlets along but they won’t be interested (the first thing I thought of was when I have to get my taxes done), and most recently… storms and power outages. My good friend was without power for nearly a week. Being able to charge it in her car and allowing the kids a movie a day helped save sanity in their household.

I love our player and although we won’t be using it on a daily basis, it will get used in situations that I need to focus or save others from my children whining and complaining from boredom. I would recommend one as a holiday gift, birthday gift or just because!
