For the tech loving Dad that likes to move fast…
To say that we are a “computer family” is a bit of an understatement.
We have a family of six and own five computers.
Our love of digital media goes beyond the computers, too!
Our video game systems are also hooked up through Wi-Fi. We stream movies, television shows and Josh loves to play Xbox Live!
A quality router is a MUST in this house!
We have been using what we thought was an adequate router, but with summer here and more of us home at the same time using the Wi-Fi… we have noticed a lag in our connections. I think we were pushing the poor thing to it’s limits because at least once a day it would go completely offline and we would have to unplug it for a few minutes to reset it. So when Linksys offered to let us review the new Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual-Band N Router, I leapt at the chance!
Set up of this particular router was a breeze… with one small problem. Four of our five computers connected without a hitch. The fifth computer we own is a bit older and is running Windows XP. That, in itself, is not a huge problem. By installing service pack 2 Windows XP becomes WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) compatible. Our problem was that the internet adapter Joshua was using was very old (7-8 years) and it only accepted WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) passwords. A quick trip to Best Buy solved our problem and every single computer was connected and flying on the internet.
There are so many things I’d love to go on and on about with this router. Let’s start with aesthetics. The design of the E4200 is low profile and sleek. I love that when I look down into my living room I don’t see a “tower” with an antenna on top of the computer desk anymore (see photo to the right).
Another aspect that we adore is the coverage. It features a full 3×3 MIMO antenna array that boosts signal strength to provide exceptional coverage and reliability so you can enjoy your wireless network from anywhere in your home. Our house has multiple levels and sometimes Joshua had difficulty staying connected… not anymore!
I mentioned WPA vs. WEP above. What that basically refers to is internet security and WPA is more secure than WEP. The Linksys E4200 will keep Wi-Fi freeloaders and internet threats at bay with WPA/WPA2 encryption and SPI firewall to help keep your network protected.
The E4200 is the perfect accessory for the home theatre. Bring the ultimate entertainment experience to your home by connecting computers, Internet-ready TVs, game consoles, media players and more to your wireless network and the internet. QoS traffic prioritization technology is designed to move efficiently so you can enjoy fast downloads, smooth video and music streaming, and gaming and VoIP. Joshua has noticed smoother connections and hasn’t been disconnected from Xbox Live since installing!
Taking a look at the back, you’ll notice the E4200 comes with four Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000) ports. This allows for quick file sharing, 10x faster than standard Ethernet, between other Gigabit-enabled devices like computers, hard drives, and servers. Plug in your flash drive or external hard drive and you can share your files with other computers at home or over the internet!
The router management software, Cisco Connect, will help you customize your settings and quickly add multiple devices to your network. It also allows you to set up a separate “guest” password that is easily changed should you decide to restrict access. Speaking of restricting access… let’s talk parental controls! Through the Cisco Connect software you can limit internet access but shutting it off at certain times. Brilliant!
But my favorite feature of all?
Even with all five computers online and Xbox Live going… I got that result on my internet speed test.
Impressive huh? Especially since our cable provider quotes a 15 Mbps speed!
With Speed Boost, a higher quality antenna technology, you can maintain high speeds across greater distances throughout your home for maximum wireless coverage and in-home mobility.
What Dad wouldn’t want faster computer connections and better online game playing for Fathers Day?
You can purchase an Linksys E4200 for $159.99(sale price… retail $179.99)
