Santa’s elves over at Joovy decided to send Emma and Ethan one of their newest toys, the BicycooBMX Balance Bike, to review. Emma has been using a similar bike for about a year now and although she is pretty adequate with it, she isn’t quite ready for peddles. Ethan is now 3 1/2 and is ready to try his hand at a “big boy” type bike.

The bikes arrived and we quickly unpacked them to find that they were only in three pieces. Oh yeah… Santa’s elves can handle this assembly. It took Kaytlin and I less than 10 minutes to get the bikes together and the tires inflated… then we waited for the kids to wake from their naps.

Emma and Ethan seemed dazed and confused that “Santa’s Elves” decided to come so early and bring them gifts. It took them a few minutes to wake up fully and realize… “HEY! We just got a present!”. As you can see from the photo below, the bikes are more than adequate for Emma at the age of 5 and Ethan at the age of 3. With a little adjusting of the seat, these will last several years.

The Joovy BicycooBMX is a durable, well designed balance bike designed for kids 3 years and above. The frame is made of aluminum so it is strong and lightweight just like high-end bikes. I was pleasantly surprised at how lightweight these were compared to the other two brands we have been using. With the bike only weighing 7.25 lbs. Emma and Ethan both can lift and maneuver these without asking for help.

The lightweight frame also makes controlling the bike easier for the kids, unlike the heavy wooden and steel versions. The tires are 12”, pneumatic (air) and refillable, which gives it more of a “real” bike experience. Several balance bikes on the market use EVA plastic tires that wear out much quicker than the rubber tires used on the Joovy BicycooBMX. The suspension qualities of the pneumatic tires gives the kids a much smoother ride. There is also a hand brake for the rear tire which most balance bikes do not have.

After adjusting their seats and letting them have the run of the living room (it has been incredibly cold outside lately) the kids had a blast riding their bikes. As you can see from the second picture above, Emma can really get some speed up by “running” while on the bike. They really should call these running bikes or something to the effect… that is how the children propel themselves (while seated). When they get proficient on them, the hand brake comes in handy to slow them down without a wipe out or wearing the bottoms of their shoes down. When outside Emma likes to coast (quickly) down the neighbors driveway and with a hand brake I know I will not flinch (in fear) near as much.

I took a little video of the kids having a good time in the living room on the BicycooBMX Balance Bikes… Enjoy!
