Joovy 4×4 Ride On

With spring finally here to stay, the kids and I have been trying to spend more time outside. They love to ride their Joovy Bicycoo, but sometimes they feel the need for speed. That’s when the Joovy 4×4 Ride-On steps in.

When my box arrived I was in total amazement that a ride-on could come in such a compact box. I initially thought that maybe I was sent the incorrect item. But, as you can see… the box did contain an entire ride-on!

I was happy to find that most of the 4x4was already assembled for me. The rest of the assembly process was fairly simple except the steering column bar. I asked my daughter to help me with this as I didn’t want to accidentally crimp the horn wire and it was actually fairly difficult to hold it in place with only one person while trying to put the steering wheel on.

At first glance you can tell that the Joovy 4×4 Ride-On is a top-of-the-line battery powered vehicle for children. Joovy manufactures this exceptional ride-on vehicle in Taiwan and uses top-grade motors and batteries. It is an incredible miniature of an actual 4×4 that had my children fighting over who was going to be the first to test drive it.

This is a super-powered vehicle with TWO motors (each motor powers a rear wheel), a 12-volt battery with a top speed of 5 MPH. We have experience with the other major brand ride-on, and I was amazed at the difference in speed with this little ride-on. Each motor is designed to power a rear wheel whereas many competitors use only ONE motor to operate both wheels. At first, I was a bit concerned with the speed. But both Emma and Ethan have shown me that they can handle the 4×4 in both low and high gear with ease. Just for added safety, I have made it a requirement that they wear a helmet when behind the wheel.

The Joovy ride-on comes with a three position molded seat. I have the seat in the furthest back position to fit both Emma (age 5) and Ethan (almost 4). You can see above, Joovy spared no expense with the details. The rims are shiny and detailed, the roll bar has 3 accent lights (non functional), rear view mirrors on hinges so they fold in a bit and real working headlights.

The 4×4 Ride-On has an “ON/OFF” key, a high/low gear switch and a forward/reverse switch. The low gear/speed is great for beginners just learning the ropes at only 2.5 MPH. Once my kids got the hang of it they immediately switched it into high speed of 5 MPH. Some of the extra touches Joovy has thrown in is a removable red floor mat and a functioning horn.

The ride on mimics a real vehicle in several ways. To “turn it on” the kids place the key in the ignition, choose their speed/gear and direction (forward/reverse). Then they simply push down on the accelerator pedal to make it go! To slow down or stop the ride on all they have to do is release the accelerator pedal.

Joovy has even thought of a storage compartment for odds and ends. It mimics a spare tire and the cover opens for storage. It locks with a thin flat item such as a penny.

The 4×4 Ride-On operates on a 12-volt battery located underneath the detailed fake engine (isn’t it cute?). The plastic grey flaps slide over and you can remove the “engine” to access the battery for charging. My kids can a couple of good rides before the battery dies completely.

My overall thoughts on this ride on… I love the quality and detail Joovy put into making this a toy that can be passed down through several children. The recommended age range is 3-5 years but it also give a weight allowance of 80 lbs. My Emma is almost 5 1/2 but only weighs 44 pounds. If she remains on the smaller side she can enjoy this ride on for quite some time to come. Although a bit pricey, you definitely get what you pay for with this jeep.

My only suggestions would be to possibly install doors. With the speed my kids take corners I could see a possible spill from the vehicle. This is probably just the worry wart in me, but a  door would make me feel much better. I would also suggest an easier way for the kids to access the storage in the tire compartment. At 4 and 5 they have to ask for help to get their toys in and out. My biggest wish would be for Joovy to make a ride on that would hold two children at once!

The 4×4 Ride-On is available in Blueberry, Black and Pink.

WOW That is super cool! I know my son would love this! I love the blue one ~!

  4. We have a Ford F150 motorized toy truck for my son, but the battery doesn’t seem to last very long. How is the battery life for this one? It looks like a great little truck and I adore that the seat is an acutal seat and not a bench that she can slide around on. Thanks for the review!

  5. Isn’t that just super cute! I love it would love to have one but with 8 granddaughters I would probably have to have my own track accompanied by 8 Joovy’s. LOL
