I Heart (miss) Sleep

Ahhhhh… sleep. i heart you.

I have taken you for granted (and I miss you).

As a teenager, sleep and I were tight. I’d sleep 10, 12, sometimes 14 hours a night. If my parents would have let me, I probably would have slept all day on the weekends.

As a young married college student I’d sleep 10 hours tops (who needs sleep when there’s other important things to do, right? *wink*).

Our next stop on our journey was parenthood. I still remember the day before the big planned c-section. My husband and I lounged in bed, watched tv, snoozed and cuddled all day long.  Our love affair with sleep was about to be put on hold.

Emma Sleeping Almost nineteen years and four children later, I’ve still not found the time to re-ignite that affair with sleep.

Don’t get me wrong… I do love sleep. But now our open, enticing and long lasting romantic love affair with sleep has turned into a grab it when you can occasion.  I’m lucky to sleep 6-7 hours a night now, but most nights that is still not uninterrupted.

I swear my youngest two (ages 4 and 2) talk before bed. They seem to take turns calling for me in the middle of the night. If one sleeps well, the other seems to need me multiple times.

Somehow the hours in the day have dwindled. There never seems to be enough time to get everything done. “I really should get to bed earlier.” is uttered almost nightly. When, on the rare occasion, I get a chance to sleep in… well, my mattress lets me down. I feel every turn and entrance/exit my husband makes.

I sometimes daydream about curling up under a big fluffy down comforter and snoozing for several hours… in the middle of the day *gasp*! Somehow children, our 10 year old lumpy, sagging mattress and life have come between us, my dear sleep.

I do need you. Without you… my thoughts are muddy, my patience is thin, my judgment and ability to remember things wanes. Somehow when we meet my stress levels decline, my health improves and amazingly I lose weight more easily!

Oh sleep, how do I love thee… let me dream the ways…

i miss sleep too. in fact i’m counting the days till my kids are teens and WANT to sleep so i can randomly walk in their room and stare at them alternating between screaming my head off about nothing or just staring. :o) then i’ll just leave the room so they can try to fall back asleep.

a good mattress is SO important for sleep!

  2. Get otta my head! lol….could have written this myself.

Oh sleep how I love thee.

  3. I’m with you on the lack of sleep… I heart sleep, but sleep doesn’t heart me … I have a preschooler with autism and night terrors and an infant who still gets up at least once in the night… my teenager now gets as much sleep a night as the rest of our house combined!

See i was totally spoiled with my frist child, he slept through the night at 6 weeks, and pulls 10-12 hour nights now. I figuered, this is great, i can still get my 9 hours on the weekends, no problem! Then my daughter was born, and at 8 months she has YET to give me longer than 6 hours and thats only because i trashed the cheap mattress given to us and went and bought (strangley enough) a serta mattress for her crib. It has MADE the difference! Of course now my son is cutting his final teeth, and the dogs runied OUR mattress pad so we’re back to being stuck with our ROCK hard cruddy mattress, and i just come to understand that 5 hours a night and a decent cup of coffee in the morning will enable me to function just fine LOL

Oh yes…sleep becomes a long lost passion once babies are in the picture! LOL! I say to hubby all the time how I USED to sleep in until 9 o’clock…until my son was born! My daughter on the other hand slept in until 9:30-10:00 pretty much every day before brother was born! Those were the days! 🙂

Oh my goodness I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who’s kids seem bound and determined to be up multiple times each night. And I hear you on the mattress thing! My husband loves our mattress but I wake up sore every morning.

I understand the need for sleep, sometimes when everyone is gone I will take a nap and it is just bliss. Between, work, family and school sleep is in short supply and if I got to long without it I become a crabby you know what. Good luck and sweet dreams.

I could use a new mattress to – my back is bothering me more and I don’t get to sleep as much anymore either!

  9. Sleep HA HA HA!! I mutter this as I was woken up at 6:30AM on a Sunday morning.. not because I had things to do but because my 3 year feels it is fun to jump on our bed the minute he wakes up. A new mattress sounds nice… *sigh*

Sleep? What’s that? I got so used to getting up all hours of the night from when my kids were younger, that I still haven’t learned how to sleep through the night again.
