Homemade Vicks Shower Disks

 Homemade Vicks Shower Disks
DSC_0827
My husband and I have been battling what’s left of a head cold for about a week now. A hot steamy shower always helps us loosen the goop in our nose and throat, but with these menthol shower bombs you get a little extra boost. They smell great, too!

You Need
1/2 cup of Baking Soda
1 cup of cornstarch
5 table spoons of Vicks (Can use baby Vicks for a more gentle smell)
Add a teaspoon of water as your see fit. (I did 3)
Mold tray (ice cube, chocolate)
  1.  First start by getting your bowl and add in your corn starch (add a little glitter in if you want some sparkle).
  2. Now add in your Vicks and mix it around until well combined. This will be strong smelling so maybe wear gloves if your sensitive or open a window. Be mindful of how much Vicks you are adding. Too much Vicks in it it won’t melt and it will be slippery.
  3. Now add in your baking soda and mix well. IF you find you need more moisture add a teaspoon at a time but do not over do it or it won’t form right.
  4. Then mold the mixture into your ice cube tray or other molding tray (these were molded in a chocolate molding tray… you can get pretty creative with shapes & themes if you want).
  5. Then you will want to freeze them for a few hours.
  6. Take out and pop them out of the molds. You can place then into small jars for yourself or use them as gifts.
To use:
Place one in the shower with you near the drain and let it fill your shower and hopefully clear your head and nose!

  1. What a great idea. My kids seem to get sick all winter long — this will definitely help!

    • Cloey says

its actually a bad idea to put vics in hot water!!!!

      • Christina Y says

Actually Vicks use to have shower soothers years ago. I use to suffer from sinus infections several times a year until I had surgery 2 years ago. These helped cut the time of fighting the infection in half. I’ve been looking how to make them for the cold and flu season. I will be making them soon.

      • Sheila Friedline says

Explain your reasoning. My vaporizer has a reservior specifically for Vicks.

        • Erica says

your vaporizer has a separate place for vicks probably so it wont clog up the system. Vicks has made shower soothers/fizzies/etc. before. There’s an old myth that its dangerous, but the only thing I can find is that using really hot water after putting it on your body just made the menthol feel more intense.

  2. I was just looking these up last night on Pinterest. We are Santas for Seniors this year and I wanted to put some of these in the baskets. Great idea and super easy!

  3. aracely limon says

I love this idea…. might be a great gift for someone.

  4. Sarah Matos says

This is great! I will be trying this out for the next cold that strikes our house.

  5. Keara B. says

This is such a fantastic idea! I keep bottles of eucalyptus and lavender essential oil in my shower but they scent just kind of goes away. I’d love to try these for winter colds!

  6. shelly peterson says

What a clever idea! I’m going to have try and makes these to help with all the colds in my near future.

  7. Laura J says

Oh that is such a neat idea!!! I am going to have to make these for our colds this winter!

  8. Maria Iemma says

Thank you so much for showing us how to make these disks. They really work very well and clear up our congestion and saving a lot of money besides.

  9. Beth says

I don’t have a lot of money this year for Christmas, and I won’t be able to make it home. So everything I”m sending is going to be home made…this is a fantastic idea for a home that has every age from 18 month to… uh a “fine Wine”

    • Deborah says

Never be ashamed of homemade gifts if that’s all you cam do, do your best. A gift is a surprise, and usually well thought out. The only two Christmas gifts I remember from childhood were both homemade. I loved them. I was six for the first, and sixteen for the other.

  10. Janet Gernand says

I had another thought using this same great idea! How about placing disk into a coffee mug of water and placing mug on one of those electric candle warmers (sold at most craft stores and Walmart by the candles). You could then set this on your nightstand while you sleep. You could also place several disks in a crockpot filled with water for larger rooms. Thanks for this VERY helpful “recipe” 🙂
    Blessings,
    Janet
I wanted to give this 5 stars but I hit the wrong star. Unfortunately, I am unable to correct it. 🙁

    • Great idea! We like baths and I was wondering how to take advantage of this great Vicks idea and YOU solved my problem. Thanks!

    • Maria says

I used to make something similar but would sub the Vicks for eucalyptus and peppermint oil but I love these. When I made them though, instead of water I used the vapor menthol liquid to make is stronger! Also, I saw someone post about putting this in a cup on a burner….I needed an emergency humidifier when I was sick last year….crock pot and vapor liquid with a teaspoon of Vicks….amazing.

  11. Abby says

what does freezing do to the bath bombs? I froze them and took them out and let the sit and they were kinda gooey. Is that normal?

    • I’m not sure (I’ve never froze them) but I’m guessing the extra moisture from freezing them starts to dissolve them. I don’t think that gooey would be normal.

      • Stephanie says

I made these, froze them and then took them out of the molds. I went to pick one up and it crumbled, this happened to a few. What can I mix these together with to get them to stay together better?

        • I would add a touch more Vicks to the mix. They are supposed to be a bit dry to dissolve in the shower, but a little more Vicks should help it stick together.

        • I think they might need a little more Vicks. You can skip the freezer and allow them to air dry some as well. They need to be a little dry, though, so they dissolve well in the shower.

  12. LeAnna Shaw says

I was wondering if anyone had a cute little ‘saying’ to tag these with. I have made them for family members for Christmas. I wanted to add a cute tag line…..thanks.

    • Sarah says

      Breathe easy!

    • Lori says

      Just Breathe

    • Deanna J Schaeffer says

Don’t let winter take your breath away!

  13. Tara Prather says

I am about to make these for my son who is battling a bad sinus cold. I was thinking about making the mixture, putting them in the molds and let them freeze in the freezer. I will then take them out of the molds “frozen” and putting them in a ziplock freezer bag and keeping them in the freezer until ready to use. I think this would do away with any gooeyness that may occur. Anyone tried this before?

  14. Bg2bl says

be careful when freezing these- I had them in the freezer for just a few hours and now I can’t get the smell of Vicks out of my fridge! I’ve tried baking soda, vinegar and leaving door open for a few days and it still stinks!

    • Gloria says

Try charcoal lose in a pan or waded newspaper.

    • Pamela Hedlund says

Try putting them in a freezer bag to contain the smell. Or wrap in aluminum foil and put into a bag. If there’s a will there’s a way!

    • Janet says

If you put a piece of Styrofoam in the freezer that should get the smell out! Even a small cooler and leave it couple of days!

  15. I made some similar using essential oils they work prttyy good. I am going to have to try these and see if they are strongerthanks for sharing.

  16. Carole says

I found this recipe via pintrest and I am just curious as to what the mixture should look like when it is (or isn’t) moist enough.
Should it resemble the consistency of play doh? Perhaps more of a really thick paste? Or is the crumbly texture I have now correct?

    • Hi Carole,

You are looking for a thick paste with a slightly powdered texture so that it can stick together. HTH!

      Heather

  17. ashley says

I am gonna try this and put it in a bath with for me and my 6 mnth old son

  18. Vicki says

Thanks so much we all have terrible colds cant wait to try.

  19. I just got my disks out of the freezer and they crumbled. I will try again when I have more Vicks. Maybe they were too dry, but concerned I will make them too wet. I really want to make these as we all have stuffy nose and head.

  20. Rosie says

I’ve never seen anything like this, I love DIY and homemade anything, so I’m psyched to see something new! I have to keep this in mind for little gifts to give ppl when they have a cold!

  21. Teresa says

I made these for my husband, and neither of us could hardly smell them. I caught him in the shower; he’d picked it up and was having to hold it up to his face to do any good. So I gave them a try with the same results. I’ve seen recipes using essential oils, and I think I will try them next time.

  22. Sarah says

I just made some last night, in prep for school and my brothers getting colds and everything… Literally makes no scent in the shower, hot or cold water, and they’re so crumbling it’s impossible to get them out of the small muffin tin I used to mold them without them just breaking totally apart.
Maybe I just need more Rub, maybe I should just buy essential oils instead..

    • Karen says

No I’m reading this because even tho I doubled the ess oil recipe, you can’t smell it. ??‍♀️

  23. Stacie says

I made these but I rolled them out into balls. They worked really well. I love this idea thanks so much.

  24. Becky says

What a great idea! Thank you for sharing!

  25. Karlos says

After getting mine out of the freezer,, they looked great.
Put them in a jar, but they melted. I must have done something wrong.
    I will try again ?

  26. Gretchen says

I really liked this idea, but I did notice that you mention the “right” consistency without specifying what that is. Also, are they supposed to be stored in the freezer as well? I made mine and frozen them for 5-6 hours and they still cracked when I took them out. Were they too dry? I wasn’t sure because they did mold well.
And yes, these do make the shower floor quite slippery! Almost like someone spread Vaseline at one end of the shower! Be careful!

  27. This is an awesome guide. It helped my kid a lot. Thank you for sharing.

  28. Shannon says

I made this as directed intending to give them out as Christmas gifts. Good thing I decided to test one first because I can’t get it to melt in the shower no matter what I try!

  29. N says

Pls be careful when putting the disks in shower. She specifically says to place near drain…

  30. Lisa says

Hey ppl. I’m going to try this. Im always congested in the winter I hope it helps.

Can I suggest edible glitter. Just thinking of micro plastics in our oceans ?

  31. betty says

My husband had a cough that wouldn’t go away, so this was our chance to use Vicks by rubbing it on the bottom of his feet before going to bed…….his coughing stopped instantly!!!!

  32. Diane says

Do you have to put them in the freezer
