Holiday Gift Guide | Step2 Extreme Coaster

Holiday Gift Guide | Step2 Extreme Coaster

Lately I have been concentrating on creating a backyard oasis for the kids that they want to go outside and play in. We have a few good base items for them now, but they were still occasionally getting bored. My hunt brought me to Step2 where I found the Extreme Coaster. My kids love their ride on toys because of the speed, so I thought maybe my thrill junkies might get a kick out of a backyard roller coaster.

The coaster arrived at my house while I was out of town. When I came home I was greeted with 3 very large boxes in my garage. My husband was curious as to what on earth might be that big. My answer… “total fun”.

Thrill-seeking children, rejoice! Step2® has redesigned the classic Up & Down Roller Coaster to bring roller coaster fun to a wider age range. The Extreme Coaster features rugged double-wall construction and wide built-in steps for stability. Made in USA.

    • Extreme colors and styling
    • Easy-entry car allows for balanced mounting and riding
    • Smooth transition track simulates a real roller coaster hill
    • Weight Limit 75 lbs (34.1 kg)
    • Minimal adult assembly required

Assembly went fairly quick. The minimal assembly included several screws, a couple of nuts and bolts and I was done for the track. The car required a hammer and a little force. I refused to tell Emma & Ethan what it was that I was putting together and even at completion they had no clue. I instructed Emma to climb up the track and take a seat in the car. As you can see in the 1st picture, she wasn’t very amused. Then I told her to rock forward a bit (the car nests in a little divot so they can get seated before they take off)… and she was off. You can see the surprised look that turned into sheer joy in the rest of the photos.

It only took one ride and Emma was hooked. As much as she wanted to ride it again, it was now Ethan’s turn. He knew what to expect and was a little apprehensive. After following my instructions on how to safely get into the car he was off.

The final photo of Ethan tells the entire story. He was giddy with delight and couldn’t stop giggling as the coaster came to a stop.

My goal with this toy was to provide an alternative to their everyday “ho-hum”, but it wasn’t my goal to be their track master. After a few lessons on how to bring the car back to the starting point they had it down pat.

My kids are smitten with the Extreme Coaster and ask to ride it often. We store it under our deck and bring it out when a grown up can supervise. I’ve gone as far as hiding the car because they hunt for it when they think I’m not looking. We’ve invited our neighbor over for some coaster fun and within a few minutes she understood and mastered how to ride and return the car safely.

It doesn’t surprise me that that the Extreme Coaster has won the T.O.Y. (Toy of the Year) Award from Family Fun Magazine. This was a well thought out toy that covers a wide age range, 3 and up to 75 lbs), it is built as sturdy as all the other Step2 toys and with correct instruction and supervision is a safe way for our little thrill seekers to have a good time.
