Five Ways You Are Shortening The Life Of Your Mattress

Alright, you’ve done it. You’ve purchased a new mattress – a nice one – and you’re pretty excited about getting a good night’s sleep for years to come. Just throw some comfortable sheets on that bed and you’re good to go, right?

Not so fast. You may be unknowingly ruining your new mattress without even realizing it. Everything from sweating and drooling to jumping in your bed may lessen its lifespan. We’ve put together the top five ways you may be doing more harm than good. We’ll also tell you how to fix it, stat.

Letting spills and accidents soak. We’ve all been there – accidents happen. Whether someone wet the bed or a glass of water spills from the nightstand, you will damage your mattress if you leave it overnight.

If you read the fine print on your mattress warranty, more likely than not you’ll see that stains or damage from liquids/fluids will void your warranty. That means that if there is an actual manufacturer defect or issue, you have not only ruined your mattress, but also your warranty.

Simple solution? Get a waterproof protector and cover at least the surface of your mattress. With so many options available, you will be able to find one that will go unnoticed under your sheets.

Jumping on it. What kid (ok, adult) doesn’t love jumping on the bed now and then? While it seems like innocent fun, you could be messing with your mattress.

Innerspring, air and water beds will all suffer from the force of people putting excessive pressure on the mattress. Even frames, box springs and foam mattresses will wear down faster than they should, so it may be better to save the jumping for the trampoline.

Leaving it vulnerable to Bed Bugs. If you don’t know what Bed Bugs are, let us tell you. Bed Bugs are parasitic insects that feed off blood. They typically creep out at night to feed off their hosts, making you and your mattress a comfy place to set up shop.

If you suspect you may have bed bugs, take the sheets off your bed and look at the nooks and crannies – everywhere from the edges to the piping – for signs of flat, almond-shape reddish brown bugs. Check your box spring too, they can be very tiny.

You can avoid the nightmare that is a Beg Bug infestation by purchasing a mattress protector that can seal your mattress off from the world. These mattress protectors are called encasement protectors and cover all six sides of your mattress.

Sweating and drooling on the regular. Sweating and drooling at night are common sleep experiences for many. Memory foam mattresses are common culprits as they may not breathe as well as innerspring or air mattresses.

If you do not create some sort of waterproof barrier between you and your mattress (and no, sheets don’t count) it will end up absorbing that moisture. Combine that with shedding skin, hair and body oils and you’re setting your bed up for a less than appealing sleep environment. Over time, this buildup can lead to bacterial growth and odor problems.

The good news is that there are mattress protectors out there that are not only waterproof but also contain temperature regulating technology. These will keep your mattress protected from drool and help you keep cool all at the same time. We call that a win-win.

Never rotating your bed. All mattress types will benefit from rotation. This helps your bed wear evenly, something that’s important if you’re planning on maximizing its longevity.

Although some memory foam mattress brands will tell you that it’s not necessary to rotate their bed, once or twice a year won’t hurt. The up side to rotating is that you get that “brand new bed” feel after each rotation. Who doesn’t love that?

This is good information, while I’m hoping to get a new mattress, good to keep up on taking care of the one you have.

I didn’t know there was a special protector against bed bugs!

  3. I haven’t jumped on my bed in a long, long time. I don’t have any liquids in my bedroom. And thankfully no bedbugs.
