Five Reasons Why a Flip Phone Is a Great First Phone to Get for Your Teen

Many teens participate in sports, after school activities, or simply have small tasks they do to earn money, such as babysit or mow lawns on a regular basis. When your teen starts to be out and about more often, it can be difficult to be able to get in touch with them when you need to. Investing in a cell phone for your teenager may be a great way to ensure that you can contact them when you need to.

It is best to wait until your child is mature enough to use a phone responsibly though just to be sure that they do not use it in an unsafe manner. Typically, when children are teenagers, they are often responsible enough to have a basic cell phone.

When your child is ready for their own phone, use the guide below to learn why a basic flip phone may be the best option for them:

Flip Phones Are Easy to Replace

Flip phones like the Jitterbug are affordably priced and easy to use. This means that if your child loses or has their phone stolen, it will not cost you an arm and a leg to replace it. Be sure to impress upon your child how important it is for them to be responsible with their phone when you give it to them though so that you can decrease the chance of them losing it or having it stolen.

Flip Phones Do Not Allow Internet Access

In this day and age, there are many online predators looking for teens on the internet. To limit the possibility of your child being contacted by one of these predators, you need to ensure that they cannot get online without your knowledge. Choosing a phone that cannot connect to the internet will ensure that you know when and who your child is talking to online at all times because they will only be able to do it when they are in front of you on a tablet or computer.

Flip Phones Are Durable

Flip phones do not have as many delicate components in them that smartphones have. If the phones are dropped, they typically will not break into a million pieces and be left unusable. Since the screens are shut inside of the phone when the phone is closed, you do not have to worry about the screen shattering when the phone has dropped accidentally.

Flip Phones Have Great Battery Life

Flip phones do not use as much battery life as smartphones because they are not constantly running apps or refreshing email feeds. Your teen may forget to charge their phone from time to time and having a great battery life will ensure that your child’s phone is always ready to use when they need it.

Plans for Flip Phones Are Affordably Priced

The usage plans for flip phones are often very affordable because you will not have to pay for internet access. You can choose to purchase plans based off of how much you think your child should be texting or talking each month. Limiting their usage of the phone can help them to learn responsibility when it comes to phone usage.

When you get a phone for your child, it is important to set usage restrictions for the phone. It is best to have the phone left out in the kitchen or somewhere where you can easily see it when your child goes to bed. This will ensure that they do not stay up all night communicating with their friends.

  1. Hi Heather,

You won’t believe how much I loved these flip phones when I was a teenager. I wouldn’t mind getting one now as well. Talking about today’s teenagers I am afraid it would be a bit difficult to convince them using a basic phone without ” The Internet” option! This should work unless they are under peer pressure, the phone isn’t allowed at school and if we can convey them how harmful Internet is for TEENAGERS.

    A well-thought piece I must say,
    Love,
    Swati.

The internet is such a scary place for a young teen to be. I love this idea as a stepping stone into the cellular world.

  3. I think this is a great idea for a kid’s first phone. Keep them off the internet.
