May of last year I brought you a review of the Artisan 835. We had always been very brand loyal and purchased “the other brand’s” printers. That was until we started using Epson printers.

One of the design issues I had hoped would have been remedied from the 835 was the bulge in the back. This is the power supply, I believe, and it is still here. Although it doesn’t change the functions, it would be nice to be able to slide the printer a little further back into the printer spot on my computer desk.

Printer ink is a snap to replace and I love that Epson has a separate cartridge for each color. Finally you only have to replace the color that is low… very smart. This is also where you would go to remove paper jams (and in the year I’ve owned an Epson I’ve never had one).

The scanning section is large and easy to access. I’ve grown to love the scan and print function (basically a copier). With two young children in the house, sometimes multiple copies of a coloring sheet need to be made, copies of my son’s athletic schedule need to made (because he loses them easily)… things like that.

The touch screen is easy to navigate, intuitive to use and responsive to a medium touch. I love having the memory card readers in front as well as a port to plug your camera in if you need to print from the internal memory. Speaking of printing photos… the Artisan series does a fabulous job with pictures. I refused to believe for the longest time that a home printer could be as efficient and do as good of a job as the local print store, but the Artisan does.
We are loving that wi-fi features, as there are five computers in our house all in different rooms. Obviously the desk tops cannot move easily to hook up to print and the laptop users tend to not want to move the laptops to the printer room to hook up. The Epson Artisan 837 offers the ability to also print directly from your tablets and smart phones… something that had never even occurred to me but we love now.
Lastly, I’d like to point out how long the ink cartridges last on this baby. We have been using it (four of us) for nearly five months and have yet needed to replace the ink. We just this week started receiving low ink indicators for a couple of the colors.
My .02 are fairly simple. Although this printer does cost a bit more than one of the “disposable” ones at “the marts” (you know the ones… they cost almost as much as an ink refill, so you just get a new printer instead), this one will be worth hanging onto for years. With most multi-function items the quality is not as good as getting individual items that do specific jobs. With the Artisan 837, every function is top quality. I can’t say enough good things about it!
