Do I Need A Security System for Protection?

Do I Need A Security System for Protection?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, there is an overwhelming number, 3.7 million, of home invasions that have occurred each year from 2003-2007. Out of these home invasions, offenders were known to their victims in 65% of violent burglaries and offenders were strangers in 28% of the burglaries.

Although burglaries dropped around 7.8% in 2015, property crimes remain at nearly 8 million per year. Luckily, we now have many affordable ways to ensure home security for our families. If you are unsure if a security system is right for your family, take a moment to consider all of the benefits it may have.

It provides protection against unknown invaders while children are home or while you sleep.

Sadly, you may not always be able to protect your family or belongings from criminals. Having a security system is one of the only ways to ensure that you can have control over the safety of the people and possessions you love the most. When all of the lights are off and you are tucked into bed, the last thing you want to worry about is someone breaking in. If you have a security system, it may either silently alert the police that an invader is in your home or it can also make a loud siren to scare the intruder away while making you alert that there may be danger in the house.

This can also be used to protect your children from wandering outside of the house while you’re sleeping or away running and errand. Not only will it set off an alarm but you will have the option to install cameras so that you may know exactly why your alarm goes off. If someone invades your home, there is a good chance that your hidden cameras will capture their face and other definitive features. This will increase your likelihood of finding the criminal if something dreadful does happen.

It protects your house while at work or on vacation.

While you are at work or on vacation it is important that your home has adequate protection. Some people hire a house-sitter but that can prove to be unreliable. A house sitter may leave, bring strangers into the house and potentially steal. However, if you have pets, a house sitter would work great with hidden cameras so that you know they are doing a good job.

Some security systems are set up to monitor movement in your house for when you are gone for long periods of times. Monitors are set up at the base of the walls. Then when there is movement, the police are called to check on the house and your phone is called. This works best if you don’t have any animals and if you aren’t expecting anyone to check in on your house while you are away. With a security system you will have more reliable protection from police and video cameras to potentially look at through a computer from your vacation destination.

It provides protection from babysitters or people you know.

Since most home invasions are caused by people that know the family personally, it is important to talk about the possibility of abusive baby sitters and family members. It is scary to think that you will need protection from people that you trust the most but it is better to be safe than sorry. If you have young kids with a babysitter that doesn’t treat them right, you will be able to keep tabs in order to protect the health and safety of your child. Even if there is no abuse, and your child somehow gets hurt, this will provide an excellent way to figure out how that happened so that you can prevent it in the future. The benefit that this could have can range anywhere from protecting your child from safety hazards that they get into when no one is looking, to having evidence of abuse from your babysitter.

It is a way to see inside the house if a family member has a critical medical condition.

If you are a working adult and a care taker at the same time for a family member with a medical condition, you may want a more efficient way to check up on them than going home every few hours. With a security system you can ensure their safety from intruders and also from their health condition. If you install security cameras inside of the house you will be able to detect if they fall, need medical assistance, or are in danger all from the comfort of your job. This will provide you will stress relief from worrying about their safety and it will reduce the risk of avoidable injury. If family security is a major concern for you, then it would be wise to consider taking advantage of the possibility of having 24/7 surveillance.

I grew up in the 70s, in a small town, & we never locked our doors. I don’t really think it was any safer then, I think we were just very naive, I guess. Today, I think every home could use a good security system.

  2. Living in a gated community with a large dog, I don’t feel I need a security system. It never hurts to be overly prepared and safe though.
