Creating a Meadow Herb Garden

Creating a Meadow Herb Garden

I recently shared how to start a potted herb garden and shared a few great spring herbs to plant.

You’ve decided you are going to plant one, but the potted method just doesn’t do it for you.

Let’s think bigger.

Creating a meadow herb garden is all about combining the right types of plants that are both grassy and have bright colored flowers. Rustic gold, burning reds, pale pinks and barely there white petals all make up a thriving meadow herb garden. Even if you do not have a wide field to fill with herbs, you can turn the smallest bed or border into a meadow garden. Full sun and an open plan are all you need in a space. Add as many meadowlike herb plants to the space to create a full garden look.

Use these tips and add the following flowers to create a meadow herb garden.

Decide on a Color Theme

The best looking meadow gardens have a color theme, reflecting what is most often found in nature. In reality, plant diversity is not so widespread and plants tend to clump together creating blocks of color. Yellow and green are very common in meadows, as are all golden hues with patches of red. Another color combination is white and purple or pink, both types of flowers work together to create a very ethereal look.

Plant a Mature Garden

To create an instant herb meadow garden, plant mature herbs rather than small starter plants that will take time to fill out. Clump as many herbs together as possible to give the look of a garden already at its peak. The reason for doing this is because most meadow-like herbs will fill out till they hit their neighbors but they won’t overtake each other so you have a lush garden from the beginning.

DIGITAL CAMERAPlan for Summer and Autumn

Some meadow gardens are at their best late summer to early fall, but if you plan out your herb choices you can plant so that you have something blooming in the garden at all times of the growing season. Self seeders can drop their seeds all season long and come early spring these volunteer plants will begin popping up out of the soil, ensuring that the garden is growing spring to summer. You may ask gardening tips from Redlands tree service professionals.

Herbs to Create a Meadow

Yellow Dock and Yarrow are two herbs that feature dramatic blooms atop tall spikes of green. Yellow dock blooms in a tall column, while yarrow creates round, yellow flower heads that can be seen from afar. Fennel is a culinary herb with a flower head that is a sparse wide flower head that is white to yellow in color. Like yellow dock and yarrow, fennel is a tall plant that would combine well to make a high backdrop of flowers.

Yellow hollyhocks and evening primrose produce bright yellow, dainty flowers that leave some surprised that they are in fact herbs. Both of these choices make a great mid ground addition to a meadow garden and reseed well for the following year.

Lady’s mantle and white mallow are two choices that work well as meadow borders, for the edge of a garden. Both of these plants create wide clouds of dainty stems and even daintier flowers. Keep these herbs visible and in front of taller options that might make them invisible.

I will be planting some type of garden with my granddaughter here in the next 2-3 weeks (weather permitting as we just had another frost) and will keep these ideas in mind. I love planting and watching them grow over the course of the summer.

  11. This would be great for several places around our house. We usually have a vegetable garden in the back, but a herb garden would be nice for the front of the house to compliment all the goodies from the back garden.
