The Secret to Movie Night with Pop Secret

PopSecretLogoOne of the things our family agreed on when purchasing the house we are in now is that we would need to create more of our own entertainment at home as a means to try to save a little money. Taking a large family (of four then, now six) to the theater runs upwards of a quarter of our monthly grocery budget! With our house payment increasing, our entertainment budget had to decrease. So when we were offered a chance to try Pop Secret popcorn’s “the secret to movie night” at our next movie night we were up for the challenge!

Popcorn has always been a huge part of lives… from day one of our marriage actually. Both my husband and I grew up with our parents making stove popped popcorn on a regular basis. Even as a young, poor newlywed couple we could afford to pop corn… you just need a pan, oil and popcorn! As our financial abilities increased, we were able to purchase more quality popcorn like Pop Secret that produced light fluffy kernels that melt in your mouth… mmmmmmm.

Movie Night usually happens on a Friday or Saturday night and the planning for it typically starts a day or two before. In years past (before our recent dietary conversion) we would head to a local “mart” and pick up a few movie theater sized boxes of candy, some pop and a bag of popcorn kernels.  In more recent days our snack lists includes items like popcorn, organic pretzels and natural peanut butter, sliced organic apples (they taste fabulous with both peanut butter or with a bite of popcorn), pistachios and/or peanuts. Our drink list has also dwindled down. We have gone from cracking open the 2 liters to big glasses of ice water.

The next step for movie night is choosing the movie. With a large age gap between our children this can be a challenging task. With the younger of the four asking to watch the newest animated release and the older two wanting to watch the newest romance, comedy or action movie we have had to learn how to compromise. We will start our movie night around 6:00pm and watch the animated film for the younger two. Then it’s intermission which includes tucking in Emma and Ethan, making more popcorn if needed, refilling our drinks, putting more comfortable clothing on if warranted and fighting over spots on the couch for the next round. THEN we watch a more grown up movie that the four of us have agreed to.

Whatever the genre, our movie night always includes lots of cuddling on the couch covered in warm fuzzy blankets our grandma/great grandma made for us…. oh yeah, and popcorn. LOTS of popcorn!
