Ethan’s Cars 2 3rd Birthday Party & Cake

I have always wanted to decorate cakes for as long as I can remember. I was finally able to take a few Wilton cake classes a couple of years back to learn the “correct” technique and I fell in love with my new found hobby.

As most of you know already, my baby boy turned a big boy 3 this week.

We had a joint birthday party with his cousin this weekend I made him a Cars cake per request.

I have a great time creating and decorating this cake and it was fairly simple to do.

Start with a standard sheet cake and a #3 pan. I shaved a bit of the 3 off to make it “not so tall”.

The top of the sheet can the #3 were covered in “sand” colored (homemade) buttercream frosting (just mix the white with a little brown and a touch of yellow).

The side of the sheet cake is frosted in white.

Then I put the black squares on the sides, trimmed the bottom and top edge with shells, frosted a black roadway and plopped some green grass to edge the imperfections.

Kaytlin made the highway sign on her computer for me and attached it to colored toothpicks.

Top it with Lightning McQueen and viola! You are done!

Emma & Ethan couldn’t wait to sink their teeth into it. I had to store it in the oven as it was double layered and I didn’t have a cake box tall enough. They kept turning on the oven light to peek.

I think everyone at the party liked it too, as there was only a small section left by the end of the night!

Most importantly… I believe the birthday boy enjoyed his piece of cake.

Maybe some day I will tour Wilton… ahhhh, dreams.

Love that cake. My son is a cars fan as well, but I can never see myself making such a beautiful cake. His birthday is next month. Maybe I’ll try it.

very neat cake,my son would love this cake also

  9. Wow, I am soooo impressed by your cake skills! My 3 yr old wants a Lightning McQueen cake for his August bday – in fact, doesn’t ask for PRESENTS — he asks for a Lightning McQueen Cake when you ask what he wants for his bday. Talk about pressure!
So I ordered the Wilton shaped cake pan and Cars icing set. I am just crossing my fingers it will work or I am going to feel like I ruined the one thing he really wanted.
Your cake is amazing!! Great job! I’m definitely inspired. 🙂

I am impressed. I have always wanted to learn how to decorate cakes as well, especially working with fondant. You did a great job.

  15. What a great hobby! That Cars cake came out amazing!!! I would really like to make one for my sons 2nd birthday, but am nervous that if it does not come out perfect, I will be so upset and then frazzled to get another cake for his birthday. I guess practicing before the main event would be best!

    • Nicole,

I’ve been known to make a practice cake a few days ahead of time and give it to the neighbors to eat :O).

      Good luck!

  16. I adore the cake! My nephew is turning 3 in December and I love the idea you had for the party. I’ll pass on the link to my sister in law!

I love this cake. I wish I could decorate a cake this good. I used to work in a bakery and I loved it but I never have taken classes or anything like that!

  18. WOW….what a great job on the cake….it always looks really easy, but it NEVER turns out like I want it to…
